Buildsys and Envio Systems: New Czech-German tandem for smarter commercial buildings

Plug and Play Press Release

March 1, 2019 (Brno, Czech Republic) – The Czech company Buildsys, a leader in building automation, has established collaboration with the German startup Envio Systems. Together, they plan to transform existing commercial buildings into smart buildings. They want to use more efficient technologies to prevent energy wastage. At the same time, they intend to configure the technologies in buildings to respond more actively to operational factors and occupant needs. The degree of potential within the new collaboration will be revealed in a several-month pilot project presently getting under way in Frýdek-Místek.

‘The automation of technologies such as controlled ventilation, cooling, lighting, and shading can bring the annual operating costs of commercial buildings down by hundreds of thousands or even millions of crowns. There is an alarming amount of energy wastage in a number of buildings because they don’t have suitable (in some cases any) automation systems in place. These are precisely the buildings we’re going to be putting a lot more focus on in the future. New technologies even allow us to make corrections in areas where it used to be very difficult to do so,’ says Micha Petřík, head of the board at Buildsys.

New rules for old buildings too

The critical role currently being played by the long-underestimated building automation industry is clearly evident in a new legislative amendment being prepared to implement the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. For the first time, Czech laws will include terms such as ‘automation’ and ‘building management’. The new regulations will apply not only to new buildings but to many existing ones too. The issue of optimizing management systems is more pressing now than ever.

Treating buildings with artificial intelligence

Together with Envio Systems, Buildsys has now started testing a new solution in one of its projects that could prove to be the answer for existing buildings – a management system combining IoT technology and innovative software that should, in any building, be capable of collecting and analysing a range of data and then using artificial intelligence to optimize the management of individual technologies.

‘Now, it’s time to see how complicated it will be in real-life conditions to implement this solution, how compatible it’s going to be with the technologies we’re using, and whether it can really deliver the results it’s supposed to,’ explains Mr Petřík. He adds: ‘If the system proves itself, I trust that in combination with our comprehensive knowhow this could be a technology that allows us not only to effectively transform standard buildings into smarter ones but also to simplify building retrofits and renovations.’ The pilot project should be completed and assessed sometime in the middle of this year.

Collaboration thanks to Plug and Play

The two companies have come together thanks to the world’s largest innovation platform Plug and Play.  Since inception in 2006, Plug and Play has accelerated 2,000+ companies (who have raised $7 billion in venture funding). Envio, who participated in both Silicon Valley and Europe was among these companies. The startup joins the ranks of Dropbox, Paypal and N26 as a member of their global community.

‘We got in touch with Plug and Play last year through the Energy and Sustainability program. Shortly after we’d presented our vision and scope of interest to them, we participated in an event called a Deep Dive in Berlin Germany, during which we connected with Envio Systems. Our shared interests and goals were apparent right from the beginning, and that’s how the collaboration came about. It saved us a lot of searching, and we’ve been given a new way to move our business forward, so we’ll be open to this type of collaboration in the future,’ says Fady Al-Kheir, head of marketing and strategy at Energon holding, a.s., which in addition to Buildsys controls other companies in the energy industry.
